COMEDY GROUP HOPE FOR CHART SUCCESS DURING FRINGE
Camden Fringe newcomers The Metal Detector Club are hoping to get their comedy single into the charts during their show’s stint at the fringe. The song ‘Grandma’s House’ is just one part of their comedy ‘variety’ show ‘Camden Cringe’, which features a mixture of sketches, stand-up and songs to create a truly unique performance.
The Metal Detector Club consists of Graeme, Thom & Chris, three good friends currently studying at separate universities. After years of writing comedy, producing podcasts and fooling around, they think now’s the time to make their stage debut. “I think live comedy often works so much better in more intimate venues,” says Thom. “Luckily, we’re performing in I think what’s called London’s smallest theatre so it doesn’t get much more intimate than that. We’ll be having a good time sharing what we think is funny and hopefully the audience will find it funny too.” Graeme then notes: “If Gaga can do it, why can’t we?”
Highlights of the show include performances of some of their songs, a stand-up segment examining rap music and a sketch involving pitching pornographic TV show spin-offs. Graeme comments: “We all bring something different to the mix giving the show the feeling of three unique minds working together, from different angles, to create what we hope is thoroughly unique comedy experience.” “We really want the audience to get a lot out of our performance, so much so that no-one goes home empty handed,” interjects Thom. “Everyone who comes to see us each gets a copy of our fan-zine style programme and even a pin- badge too, so it’s a truly all-inclusive night out.” Chris adds: “Some of the ideas that have made it into the show are things we jokingly thought up about five years ago. We’ve finally got a platform to present all these mad and funny thoughts and ideas of ours. We can’t wait.”
The group have also written and recorded a comedy EP in preparation for their show. ‘Have A Little Cry’ features original compositions, short audio skits and even a cover of the infamous Halloween song “Monster Mash”. “It’s not just a straight cover though,” Thom protests. “It’s quite slow and sombre at the start before building up into something quite anarchic.” “I also wrote a Nickelback parody song for the EP,” notes Chris. “There’s a real variety to both the what’s in the EP and what we do as a whole. Our ideas come from everywhere.”
But it’s the group’s attempt at modern rap that they hope will prove most popular with people. ‘Grandma’s House’ is a rough spoof of urban rap and features lyrics describing a Grandmother’s home as somewhere prone to meth-labs and drive-by shootings. “They say write about what you know,” says Thom, “so naturally we started writing about orgy’s at Grandma’s House.” “I never went to my grandma’s house but if I did this song is how I would have liked it to have been,” notes Graeme. During the run of the show, the group are hoping to publicise the song enough in order for it to make it into the charts based on download sales. Graeme is optimistic about the idea, saying: “Warhol said everyone will be famous for 15 minutes, well Grandma’s House is only four so we might have to play it a few times.”
